ABOUT KACKAR MOUNTAINS

Located in the eastern Black Sea, parallel to the coast between Rize and Hopa, Kackar Mountains range offers a magnificent view with every tones of green forests, clear blue lakes and glaciers.
The best time for climbing is August to September during summer, February to March during winter.

Kackar range is made up mostly of granite, cyanite, andesite and diorite. Swift running water and glaciers have caused significant erosion, which has given the mountains a rough broken appearance. The northern slopes, which are covered with lush vegetation, rise right out of the sea. The Kackar Mountains can be divided into three sections: Vercenik in the west, Kavran in the centre, and Altiparmak in the east.

The Kaçkar Mountains are one of the 200 ecological sites under preservation with its breathtaking beauty and cultural traits. They are the most important stretch of the Alp-Himalayan formation in Anatolia. The mountains stand at 40 km’s inland and reach nearly 4000 meters of height). The humid and mild climate on the north of the mountains determines the flora there. They have created a unique ecosystem in the region.  As it is a migratory route for predatory birds, it has become a natural habitat for a variety of them. In addition, it inhabits mammals such as bear, jackal, fox, lynx, wild cat, mountain goat, roe, marten, and sable. There are also rare species of birds such as birch, Caucasian mountain-rooster, mountain partridge, bearded vulture, and snake-eagle. Their presence increases the importance of this region. It also has rich flora with 2,500 varieties of plants and flowers. 300 of them are found exclusively in Turkey and 160 of them grow only on the Kaçkar Mountains. The old forests of the Eastern Black sea Mountains are the only mild climate rain and boreal forests in Turkey, and are unique with their biological diversity.

ABOUT MOUNT ARARAT

Turkey's highest mountain, Mount Ararat (Buyuk Agri) is a snow-capped volcanic cone, located in extreme northeast Turkey, ten miles west of Iran, and 20 miles south of Armenia with an altitude of 5137m. A smaller cone, Little Ararat (3896m) rises just southeast of the main peak. Ararat has no crater, and no eruption has ever been recorded. Today Nomadic people reside on the mountain, migrating between the valleys and high pastures with their herds of cattle and sheep. The summit of this mountain, which Marco Polo said no one would ever be able to climb, was successfully reached according to records on the 9th of October 1829 by Prof. Frederick Von Parot.

A great combination of two destinations

The Kackar (or Little Caucasus) mountains, rising from the Black Sea, is an area hardly known outside Turkey. Here the inhabitants still lead a nomadic life, travelling with their livestock from one valley to the next, in search of fresh grazing. We trek through this beautiful area to climb Mt Kackar (3937m) with spectacular views of the whole range, and this prepares us for our next challenge, Mt Ararat (5165m). The ascent of Mt Ararat is non-technical but requires a good level of fitness, and the final optional summit ascent crosses both snow and ice. Here we may use crampons, which can be provided (with familiarisation if required). Both ascents involve crossing some very rough terrain and you need a head for heights. Finally, we end the trip in the delightful city of Istanbul, with its stunning mosques, palaces and markets.
